First off, I have been on the artist side of this issue. I recently did a promo ad for a makeup line (that shall remain nameless, sorry y'all) where our host was supposed to talk about how much she loved this certain product. We were supposed to feature specific products that were new to the line that they were trying to draw attention to. Prior to the shoot, I found myself wondering, am I supposed to use only this product for this shoot? I don't have much of it in my kit, should I go buy some or will they provide some for me to use on set?? Well the answer to all of those questions is, NO. In my conversation with the director, I was instructed to make each model look natural and glowing using my own technique and product and they would later use certain products from the client's line in different shots. This my friends, is what sparked my interest as to whether this happens all the time..Is it all just a ploy?? But the unfortunate fact is, we will never know. These people are all under contracts and their pretty little Almay and Cover girl lips are sealed!
But to take it a step further, let's pretend we are going to Kate Hudson's home or hotel to do her makeup for an event or red carpet. We show up with all Almay products, how would she react? Does she actually use these products on a day to day basis, and more so does she use these products to get ready for huge events?? Please forgive me, I hate to be a negative Nancy, but.. I think not. I have no doubt in the fact that due to the increasing interest in higher end beauty lines, and the growing number of stores that make these lines accessible to you such as Sephora, that the drug store lines have really had to step their game up. And with that being said I would like to stress the point that there is nothing wrong with these less expensive lines for day to day use by the consumer, but I am just not convinced that Taylor Swift's "I absolutely can't live without" product is going to be off the Cover Girl self. I also doubt that the professional makeup artists that are hired for these gigs have kits full of Almay or Maybelline.
The same thing goes for these hair color commercials. Is Tina Fey really using Garnier to cover her greys?? Is Gwen Steffani really using Loreal to achieve that ultimate platinum blonde?? No, no, no, NO! This is just absolutely impossible. And I vouch for this theory more than I vouch for my makeup theory because I personally color multiple client's hair per week and grey coverage and blondes are 2 of the hardest things to achieve. I simply do not think these celebs would let a box of Garnier even come within 10 feet of them. I mean come on, it is almost laughable. Hair color is just not something you can cheat or cut corners with so these ads tend to bother me more so than any makeup commercial.
The ultimate reality is these celebs are getting paid A LOT to do these ads and campaigns. And trust me, we are not hating on that, I mean who wouldn't sign on to that deal? They probably get endless amounts of the products they endorse to use at their own free will. They can use that opportunity to donate anything they don't use to shelters, or people who are less fortunate. At the end of the day, this is a business, people love celebrities, and celebrities sell products. Regardless, some girl in rural Utah is still going to continue to buy Almay eye shadow, convinced that it will look as flawless on her as sit did on Kate in that commercial, and who are we to burst that bubble?? We live in a celeb obsessed society guys, and this is just how these things go down :)
We would love to hear your take on this issue. Does it bother you?? Do you feel lied to or tricked?? Or do you simply just not care?? Let us know beautynistas. Let the discussion continue!
