Happy Happy Friday Beautynistas! I hope you all have something exciting to look forward to this weekend, even if that something exciting only means a night of margaritas followed by a chance to sleep in. Oh wait I just described what I am looking forward to this weekend. Any wayyyy, we all are pretty aware that Friday is my favorite day of the week. And when I say week, I mean work week because in real life I guess Saturday would have to be my actual favorite day of the week. Saturday is the only day of the week that is not tainted with any form of work. Unless of course you are working a wedding or squeezing in clients that didn't fit during the actual week..but for now, wedding season is over and my clients are done for the month so I am still sticking with Saturday being my favorite day! I know I know, you're thinking "get to the point Cassi". So here it goes...
Today's vent blog sesh was inspired by none other than TMZ!! While sitting at work while browsing gossip columns online while pretending to look busy on set working today, I came across a "today in history" section on the TMZ website that stated that on October 12, 2010 Christina Aguilera divorced her husband. But even though TMZ obviously has a track record full of credibility (sarcasm), this is not actually what drew me to this article. What drew me to this article was the picture they had posted of Christina. The single toned platinum blonde hair, the bright pink lip, and the awkwardly caught camera angle, thanks TMZ, your are so kind and flattering. I tried and tried to lift this picture from the site to show you but was unsuccessful so feel free to follow the link and take a look for yourself. I was however able to find a regular pic of Christina rockin' some extensions (left) and we love Christina here at Sassy Chic, but we are not in love with these stringy extensions. Now the other thing that really caught my attention about this picture was the extensions. And then I started thinking about extensions and about how many times I see bad extensions, and then I started thinking that if I am even noticing the extensions that obviously, then this in and of it's self is a problem.
I mean let's be honest, we all want long full luxurious hair..and if you don't, then I just don't relate to you ;) I kid I kid. And due to the fact that we all want long luxurious hair, some of us are prompted to get extensions. Now we are kidding ourselves if we plan on getting longer locks and passing them off as real, or worse lying and saying they are real. (First off, don't do it, just don't, we all know the truth and you will only look like a liar) But there are definitely steps we can take to make these extensions blend and appear as natural as possible. Who would have ever thought I would have ever used the words extensions and natural in the same sentence?? Weird! But with all of these thoughts stemming in my head, I wanted to talk with you guys a little bit more about how to manage your
First off this all depends on if you are putting in your own clip in extensions, (and I say clip ins because I refuse to address the "glue in yourself" extensions) or if you are getting them professionally done. I won't spend too much time on the professionally done ones until we are in the maintenance portion because Most of the leg work as far as putting them in and blending them should be up to your stylist. So moving on to the at home clip in extensions. When purchasing your own clip in extensions you first want to make sure you get the closest shade to your actual hair color. This means it is better to actually go in to the store and not order them online. Bad color match ups are the number one give away that your hair..well, just isn't your hair! After finding the right color, you want to make sure you get the ones that have separate strips of hair and not just all one piece. You can still cut these to make them fit the shape of your head, but this will be easier with the strips. Now When putting these clip ins in you HAVE to section your hair. Start by lightly teasing at the root of your hair in each section to give the clip something to catch hold on so it does not continue to slide out. No one wants their clip in to fall out at the dinner table, no one!
Now, I recommend you putting in one strip, starting at the nape of the neck and another one every 1-2 inches up to about mid head. You don't want to clip them in to high because you want to leave enough hair at the crown of the head to pull down over and hide them. You also may want to add a strip or 2 on each side of the head above the ear. Stay away from getting too close to the temple as you don't want the clip to show. Now, when it comes to styling your extensions, I recommend curling them. NOW PAY ATTENTION, before putting any sort of heat on your extensions you much make sure they are human hair. I don't care what the eager sales man at the beauty supply store told you, you can NOT curl or straiten synthetic hair. Ok, so at this point once all the clips are in and secured, you can now curl your hair as you would your normal hair. Be gentle though because again, to make them stay in longer you want to reduce tension on the clips. It is even sometimes helpful to curl the extensions prior to putting them in. I recommend curly over strait because it simply tends to blend in with your natural hair much better. If you are though in fact going to wear them strait, then make sure to straiten your hair as best you can BEFORE putting extensions in. This way once the extensions are in, you are not seeing any random patches of hair that you may have missed had you put extensions in first.
When it comes to maintenance, here are some DO's and DON"TS!
DO take them out before bed (clip in only)
DON'T sleep in them (clip in only)
DO condition them (If they are permanent, don't condition at the root, it will loosen the bonds)
DON'T use too much product on them
DO use a natural bristle brush to brush through
DO braid them to avoid knotting
DO keep clip ins in some sort of case to avoid knotting and rattyness
DON'T make them too long, make sure to naturally blend them with your real hair, if they are too long there will be a more dramatic shelf where your hair stops and the extensions begin
