Getting a sunburn is a very bad idea, not that it is ever something that is planned, but let's be honest everyone gets a little carried away and careless on that very first beach day of the season. You turn to your friend saying "I just want to get a base first and then I will apply sun screen". WRONG!!!! We are all guilty of it, but at that point the damage is done. Sunburns look bad, they hurt, they peel and they cause long term skin damage. There is no up side to a sun burn and the severity of it is too often over looked for the vanity of achieving that summer glow. Grab your sunscreens beautynistas, and load it on. I promise you, you will STILL get color, but you will get it the safe way because sunburns are not cute. They are not even cute on Kim K (image above) and almost everything is cute on Kim K. If by chance you are too late though, here are some tips on treating a sun burn once the damage is done...spread the word
**The very second you start to feel that tinge or tingle that we all know can turn in to a burn, don't wait, get out of the sun and re-apply your sun screen. It can take up to 4-6 hours for symptoms of a burn to come in to effect, which is why it is so important for you apply sun protectant from the beginning. Sometimes once you start to feel it, there is no turning back.
**After you have showered, make sure to apply a thick moisturizer. Make sure to also continue to reapply these moisturizers; especially before bed as your sheets can rub and agitate your burn. It is also ok to apply a hydrocortisone or aloe vera to eliminate any discomfort. It is NOT ok to scrub, exfoliate or pick at your burns or skin until it is completely heeled.
** Any sunburn can draw fluids away from the rest of your body in attempt to moisturize and heal the wound it's self. Make sure to drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.
** Take Ibuprofen the instant you start to see or feel symptoms. It will help to reduce swelling and redness. It can also help to reduce any long term damage if taken soon enough.
**Take luke warm showers. Any excess heat such as hot water can make the burns worse. The cooler water will help to soothe and calm the burns.
