Goooood afternoon beautynistas!! I have been putting things, opinions, and notes together for almost a week now for this specific post on fragrances. So, this morning on the train when I had a specific occurrence with a woman sitting next to me and her scent, it made it clear to me that I had to post this article, TODAY! Here's how it went down, I was sitting on the train, minding my own business, listening to my music and dreading the impending gym session that lie ahead of me when it happened....A women sat down next to me, and as she sat down, a whole waft of her perfume just attacked my poor innocent little nostrils. I mean this particular perfume scent was not a favorable one to begin with (said women was wearing orthopedic shoes and way too much hairspray, so off that visual alone I KNOW you know what perfume scent I'm talking about). But on top of it being absolutely terrible, she was just simply wearing way too much. To be fair, no scent is good when there is too much, which is another mistake women tend to make. So anyway, after gagging and literally coughing the whole way on the train, while also trying to disguise my disgust, I thought to myself... "today I'll post the perfume article." The train woman story really has little to do with the below article, but it got my mind spinning on the perfume topic in general...
Does your choice of fragrance define you or your personality? It is a pretty legit question when you think about it. Are you the type of girl that has a signature scent? Or do you like to wear different scents and perfumes for different moods or occasions? Though there are perks to both, I particularly favor having my own signature scent. I know, I know there are like 5,890,980 other women in the world that probably definitely have the same "signature scent" as me, but you get the point. I like having that familiar scent, I feel more like myself when I leave the house after spritzing on my favorite perfume. It's something that becomes recognizable about you to others around you. I enjoy when friends of mine recognize my scent somewhere and will later tell me things like "I smelled someone with your perfume on yesterday and thought of you". It's not really your perfume or your scent, but in your own little world or small circle, it is. It is just another ironic, unique way to stand out. Believe it or not studies show that women who tend to wear the same scent all the time come across as more warm and familiar to those around them (co workers, friends, clients, etc). Women all over the world separate themselves from other women with their own particular sense of style or fashion. Some women tend to wear their hair the same way consistently or have their go to lipstick that they always always wear. There is sometimes a necklace that they never take off or a nail polish that they choose every time they get their manicures. To me, your scent is no different, it's another way of showing your personality or defining yourself....even if just for, yourself.
Sex symbol Marilyn Monroe confessed that she only wore Chanel No. 5 in bed, and forever identified herself with that specific fragrance. For
Marilyn and myself, it might have been easy, but many people debate on
the concept – same fragrance every day or multiple scents for different times? Now that I have ranted on about my own personal choice on the topic, let's consider the two schools of thought.
Why go with a signature scent:
- It's your favorite and you love it.
- It defines you and your personality.
- You never have to think about what scent to wear.
- It tends to have that powerful, room-lingering ability. People know and remember you by it.
- It can be cheaper than owning several different perfumes.
Why choose different scents:
- It allows you to test multiples on your body as perfumes tend to smell differently on different people.
- You can take advantage of seasonal perfumes
- You can change it based off moods..(lighter floral perfumes for happier moods)
- When wearing different scents, try to choose a neutral smelling body wash and lotion as mixing multiple smells can tend to be overwhelming.
Now, does it have to be one or the other?? One scent or a million? I don't think so. A gentleman (yes gentlemen, this is not only for women) I work with says he wears the same scent every day but tends to switch that one scent up every 6 months, or every season. This is something I am not opposed to. Seeing as Calvin Klein Euphoria is my all time favorite perfume, there are other scents that I like as well. I'm more open to it knowing I could always go back. I personally would probably only switch it out for a night or a week or so, before going through with-draw and switching right back.... Another co worker told me she only wears Burberry Brit and has no interest in trying or wearing anything else. She said she loves it because she knows exactly how it reacts and smells on her body specifically. A friend of mine says she tends to wear a certain scent daily but then tends to switch it up for a night out or for special occasions. Each individual person has their own beauty and fragrance routine and this is one of the main reasons why this was so fascinating to me, I was genuinely curious to find out different people's preferences and why.
So my question for you ladies, is which do you prefer and why? I want to know what works for you and what your reasoning is. Who knows, maybe I can be swayed ;) And if you have a signature scent, what is it? But always remember, with perfumes, less is more!
