Good morning beautynistas! Hope you all are awake and ready for a fabulous Thursday. Despite the cooler NYC weather this morning, spring is a comin' ! And with spring comes trends, and with trends comes...well, more trends. So with that being said, as much as it pains me to say it being that I am a wavy girl myself, it is time to break out those straightening irons ladies!
After several seasons in the shadows while waves and curls took over, straighter locks are back and are a huge spring trend this year. They were seen all over the twenty thirteen fashion week runways at shows including Derek Lam, Emilio Pucci, Michael Kors and more. Now don't be confused, straight locks do not have to mean flat locks. This is an argument I have several times a week when I go to pick up a straightening iron to use on a guest or client. "Oh no I can't use flat irons on my hair, my hair is already thin and flat" is usually the response I get. Nails on a chalk board, are you the hair stylist?? or am I? So let me say it again, straight hair does not mean flat hair so let's start by ditching the commonly used term "flat iron" and revert back to the original name "straightening iron. With all the misconceptions about strait hair though, here are a few tips on how to rock those sultry straighter locks.
First off, make sure your hair is in top condition before trying this trend.
Invest in a good oil that will add shine, while also protecting your
tresses. If your hair is slightly damaged or prone to breakage, you can also use a heat protector spray before using the iron, Redken specifically makes a great one. When applying a protector, spray it on section by section and brush through the hair before taking the iron to it. This will prevent the dreaded sizzle we all hear when an iron touches wet product infused hair.
Now, let's tackle the flat hair vs. straight hair dilemma. If you have naturally thin or fine hair, and want to prevent any added loss of volume and fullness then here is your solution. Try applying a volumizing serum to damp hair before blow drying. I would stick to serums rather than gels as gels can tend to be too heavy on fine hair and makes it harder for the product to break down and absorb in to thinner hair when dry. These volumizing serums will give your hair a little extra bounce after your blow dry. You can also try to use a root lifting spray. Again, spray this on section by section to damp hair aiming at the root. After the hair is dried and straightened, flip your head over, shake your hair out, and use a gentle volumizing finishing spray.
As far as the actual styling goes, I should first state that we all have different hair textures and different amounts of hair. So knowing that, you should know that even though we are striving to achieve a certain trending look, it is not always going to look exactly the same as it did on that hair model you may have seen it on. IE: just like that new Victoria Secret bikini that every one is raving over isn't going to look the same on us as it does on Adriana Lima. Let's not be un realistic, and work with we got sisters. So if you have thicker, more coarse hair, you may have to take smaller sections and work a little harder at really getting in there and straightening each piece. You don't necessarily have to worry about losing volume so its ok to go a little crazier with the iron and get it really straight and smoothed out. Now, if you are like yours truly with finer hair, then you may want to refrain from going over each section repeatedly. Just run the iron quickly and lightly through freshly blown out hair. You can also try to curve the iron inward at the ends as opposed to pulling it strait down, this will give it a slight bump at the ends that tends to create the illusion of more hair. And now my friends, you will have beautifully straightened hair that doesn't fall flat to your face. But more importantly, you will be sporting one of the hottest hair trends out there. Rock on!
