We all knew it would happen, it was just a matter of when. In recent years, hair stylists have continuously heard "more volume, more volume!". With the increase in popularity of more voluminous hair raging the nation, it was only a matter of time before the style that kick started it all came back on to the scene to steal the spotlight. The BOUFFANT has resurfaced and is hotter than ever. Now let's be clear, no disrespect to the late Amy Winehouse, but that's not the kind of bouffant we are talking about. Think more sophisticated and vintage, think Sophia Loren, think Twiggy. Though these chic and classy bouffants took over runways, fear not, they can easily translate in to the every day life of the average beautynista.
The most basic and common way to sport this look is usually worn with a head band. Now, here is where most people make the mistake. I find that more often than not when my clients try this look at home, they will put the head band in FIRST and then try to tease the hair up to the desired volume after. Doing this will not give you the volume that you may be wanting to achieve. (NOTE: any styling or curling should be done before the tease) Try gently backcombing the hair first, in even sections all around the head, from ear to ear and moving back to the crown. Don't brush out the tease until you are done teasing the whole thing. Then use a wide toothed comb and gently comb the hair back ward. At this point you can take the head band of your choice and slide it in. Once you put the band in you will see that added bump behind the head band that ultimately gives it that bouffant style. You can also get a headband that camouflages with your hair color like in the picture to the left, this will help to keep attention on your bold style and not on a statement headband.
This look can also be worn up, whether it be an attempt to hide 3rd day hair, or a night out, this is always a go to option. You would do the same steps taken in the style above, but instead of leaving your locks to hang loose, you would tie them up. I find that gently twisting the ends in to a bun at the nape of the neck and securing with bobbi pins is the easiest and tends to not effect the tease as much. You can also pull it back in to a pony tail, but when doing so, hold the hair about an inch from your head when securing the hair tie. This will help to save the structure of your tease as hair ties tend to pull tightly and decrease volume. Once the tie is in, you can then tighten the hold. Don't forget to finish off with a light hair spray and a shine sheen!
I hope these little tips inspire you to try a similar look at home, and as always, we want to see the pics!
