With the never ending winter that seemed to linger in New York for absolute ever, us New Yorkers have finally opened our arms to spring, welcoming all of the beauty that comes with it.....except the dreaded allergies. The NY Daily News says that "thanks to the longer than usual freezing temps, trees are blooming later than usual too, creating a perfect storm of overlapping tree pollen, grass pollen, and mold seasons" Greeeaaaaaat, that sounds just fabulous, not. So what can we do to prevent or aid in the miserable-ness that these allergies bring? Check out a few home ingredients below that may help out!
1) Yogurt- Yogurt has probiotics that are believed to help balance bacteria levels in your gut, seemingly strengthening your immune system. When your immune system is up, you are less prone to random allergy attacks. Stick to low fat yogurts or sugar free yogurts such as greek yogurt.
2) Walnuts- Though walnuts are my least favorite in the nut family, they are rich in omega 3's and antioxidants which help to reduce inflammation caused by allergies. Bye bye redness!
3) Cocoa Powder- Not only do we all love something a little sweet, its full of quercetin which is yet another anti inflammatory. You can sprinkle it in to a fresh fruit smoothie or on top of that yogurt for a double whammy effect!
4) Green Tea- As if we needed another excuse to drink green tea, being that is delicious and rumored to curb our appetites and help us stay skinny, ;) ...It is also rich in quercetin and in the anti-oxidant epigallocatechin-3-gallate. This can help to reduce that nasty mucus and alleviate some allergies.
Fight those sneezes, runny noses, and nasty colds and try some of these tricks in your diet daily!
